Spelling Bee Fail

Who says a Spelling Bee can't be funny? Watch this person have a challenge with the word "Heron" below. Speaking of this, I still don't know why they air the national spelling bee on ESPN, but I can't help it, I have to watch for at least 20 minutes. Just to see if one of the kids faints, curses or to look at the funny parents who get pissed off at their kids for losing.

Random Things, January 2012

- Adele will win everything at the Grammy Awards that she is nominated for. She practically saved the music industry in 2011, so it's guaranteed. She should be coming up with some creative speeches to make it more interesting.

- I'm fairly sure the characters on Toddlers and Tiaras are created using CGI.

- After Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall became Pro Bowl MVP with a record breaking performance of 4 touchdown catches, I'm pretty sure Kim Kardashian was frantically trying to get his phone number.

- WB needs to release some more official Catwoman from The Dark Knight Rises. A poster would work. Also, the next trailer should have more Catwoman in her suit!

- Demi Moore advice: Take a vacation, eat a sandwich, and go talk to Oprah. You will be cured.

- Matthew Broderick reprises Ferris Bueller in a new Super Bowl commercial for Honda. I have a feeling this will lead to a film sequel with the original cast. Except without Honda. Watch it below.

2012 Academy Awards Snubs

The Oscar nominations were announced today and you can see the list here. There are some pretty big snubs this year, showing the Academy Awards won't be any different this year.

Best Picture - There can be a maximum of 10 nominations, but there were only 9 nominated this year. Your telling me they couldn't include Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2, Bridesmaids, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and/or The Ides of March? Harry Potter is the biggest snub being it was the best reviewed film of the year by critics and moviegoers. I believe it was snubbed simply because it is a fantasy film based on books that began as children's novels and morphed into beloved books for people of all ages, and because it is a big budget blockbuster. Those rarely get nominated. The Academy tends to like lower budget films and dramas, not major blockbusters and not fantasy/action/comedy/horror, no matter how good those films are. And there is no way The Tree of Life is better than any of the above three films. It's good, but not great.

I'm calling it now: The Dark Knight Rises, no matter how good it will be, will not win Best Picture next year. It might get nominated since people were furious that The Dark Knight wasn't. I honestly don't even know what film won best picture before last year. Many of the films that win best picture end up being forgotten.

Best Animated Feature - The Adventures of TinTin. That's simple. I'm sure I'm not the only one surprised it didn't get a nomination. They nominated two foreign language films that haven't even been released in the States.

Best Supporting Actor - Alan Rickman, Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2. His performance was masterful, but we all should have known he would be ignored. I'm sorry, Jonah Hill is great, but his performance in Moneyball was nothing special, and not better than Rickman. To me that nomination is just trying to say, "Look! We're hip!"

Best Actor - Michael Fassbender, Shame. He put in a great performance that has been much talked about, but not at these awards.

I was pleasantly surprised that Melissa McCarthy received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Bridesmaids. She probably won't win since it's a comedy, but I'm glad she was nominated. However, Harry Potter got the big snub of the year. It is the biggest franchise of all time, with this final film being the most critically acclaimed plus making $380 Million in the USA, and it barely got anything, except for art and special effects.

Snow White & The Huntsman Trailer 2!

Oh. Shit. This second trailer for Snow White & The Huntsman (June 1, 2012) is mind-blowingly amazing. I am officially more excited for this adaptation than I am for Mirror Mirror, which comes out March 16, 2012... just over 2 months before The Huntsman

Charlize Theron absolutely nails the Evil Queen in this trailer, and it is giving me a Lord of the Rings vibe in every single way. Maybe she will even surpass Bane (Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises) as the best villian of 2012? Still way too early to tell, obviously. Might we see the first full trailer for The Hobbit attached to this film? Would be smart. The battle between Snow White & The Huntsman and Mirror Mirror, as well as Charlize Theron & Julia Roberts' adaptations of the Evil Queen, will be something for all movie buffs to look forward to in 2012. Of course, there's a chance both films will be great, but I'm sure people will have fun arguing anyway.

SOPA & PIPA Can Suck It

-First off, visit http://americancensorship.org/ and make sure to sign the petition against SOPA and PIPA, which could signal the end of online freedom and expression, and sites like Wikipedia as well as personal fan sites would not be able to survive. We support protecting copy-writes and trying to stop piracy, but congress is going about this in an over-complicated way (hah...go figure, congress being overly complicated and power hungry) and could censor us all, giving the government the power to do so. The only "PIPA" you should support is Pippa Middleton.
Now, in some other news...

-Ricky Gervais wasn't quite as harsh at the 2012 Golden Globes as he was in 2011, but he was never going to top that. And he didn't need to be harsh to be funny, he still was. Overall the show wasn't too great, though Meryl Streep did say "shit", but it was bleeped out, there must have been an extra long delay.

-Someone named McKay Hatch who started the "No Cussing Club" is targeting tonight's episode of Modern Family, which features 2-year-old Lily dropping a bleeped-out F bomb. He wants people to protest it and ABC to pull the episode. Yeah, good luck with that. I hope they know more people will now watch. Seriously, it's a bleeped out word, if you don't like it CHANGE THE CHANNEL. And speaking of 2-year-olds, it sounds like one made up the name "No Cussing Club".

Things I Want to Happen at the 2012 Golden Globes

- For Golden Globes host, Ricky Gervais, to be better than ever. Let 'em have it! It hasn't even started yet and he gave us a little taste with the above picture of himself he posted on Twitter. He said, "Some last minute preparation so I don't look out of place at The Golden Globes." After last year's show, some people said he was "mean spirited." I couldn't disagree more, and I'm glad NBC has brought him back! I hope to see plenty of awkward smiles and nervous laughter.

-I would like to see at least one person drop the F-bomb. Melissa Leo did it at the Oscars last year and it was glorious! They serve alcohol at the Golden Globes, so I'd say there is a fairly good chance we hear a "fuck" blurted out. And then the subsequent overreaction, which is as American as apple pie. (See: Janet Jackson and Nipplegate, which was still in the courts until recently!)

-Someone to trip on the stairs, and then make a joke about it and acknowledge that it happened. Don't try to hide it or cover, roll with it!

-Which famous person will be visibly drunk? As mentioned before, the Golden Globes are a bit less stuffy than the Oscars by serving alcohol. There is bound to be someone that gets schwasted at one of those tables. I'm pretty sure Meryl Streep was tipsy last year, she knows how to roll at these long awards shoes by now.

It airs this Sunday, January 15 on NBC.

Shit Girls Say Videos

The latest trend on YouTube is making videos of "Shit Girls Say." It started with the original video above featuring Juliette Lewis. Some other funny versions have popped up as well, with many talented people spoofing stereotypes. I love when people can poke fun at that, thus breaking those stereotypes and having a good laugh in the process. Besides that there are "shit guys say" and "shit drunk girls say" to name a few. Here are some:

Harry Potter DVD & Blu Ray Production Being Halted

For those of you looking to complete your collection of the Harry Potter films, or still want Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2, you have to hurry because WB has halted production of them. Once they run out, that is it! It's similar to what they do with the "Disney vault" where they stop producing DVD/Blu Ray's for a couple years and then re-release them with new packaging and features, presumably to make money and introduce them to new fans.

But fear not Potter fans, they will be re-released apparently before/during the 2012 Holiday season, so it won't be a couple years. Hopefully when they do this, the films will be released in extended versions with never before seen footage. There is plenty of it. I doubt they will have as much extra footage as the Lord of the Rings extended editions, but hopefully something that adds to the value. Otherwise, what is the point of pulling them from the shelves for a year?

Also, please vote for PopCultureSpin for a shorty award in the "other" category! I will love you. http://shortyawards.com/category/other/ It takes less than a minute!
